In this Hollywood hotel, where he received us, the artist is always rock soft-spoken, gentlemanly manners and appearance that we studied charm. Johnny Depp, 46, a door that day leaving a beret exceed his hair, all dark denim, a dark jacket with tartan, and scarf down a velvet green and purple. There are also glasses with blue lenses, rings and pendants in silver, the goatee … A cool and sexy look that has been consecrated in February by “GQ Magazine”, the “most stylish man in the world” . But Johnny prefers to talk about his art chameleon, his family life, and its projects, including a film with Vanessa Paradis, and of course Tim Burton, the director preferred. “Alice in Wonderland” is his seventh film with Tim Burton and Johnny Depp is more psychedelic than ever in the role of the hatter who is out of his head. This actor Electric has created a way to play, affirming an identity entirely unique, beyond its many metamorphoses. Time for an interview, he takes us into his wonderful world.

How did you get the idea of playing the character of the mad hatter … way too crazy?

Going to test my camera with my wig and dark circles of different colors, I said: “Producers are still panicking! “(Laughter). But I followed my instinct, and Tim Burton had on my side. Without concert, Tim and I had designed the way we image the hatter, and our two visions overlapped! Then we studied all the characters hair orange, Bozo the Clown to coat carrots through … well, all sorts of strange people, and it was a little disturbing! (Laughter)

From a sketch that is part of your usual working method?

I like to paint, and the first thing that comes to mind when you approach a role, they are images. Less, if I am playing someone who existed, but for drawing characters in the imagination, is primarily visual. Body language and work on voice come after, and this time the inspiration came directly from the two books by Lewis Carroll in which Tim was based, “Alice in Wonderland” and its sequel, “De l the other side of the mirror. ”

You were familiar with these books?

Coincidentally, I began to read and dissect these books just before they offered me the film. I am fascinated by the puzzles scattered by Lewis Carroll, including the fact that the letter M, which is often corresponds to mercury used to manufacture the caps, which poisoned the hatters. The index then was my key. I am told that the damage of mercury on my guys were evident by breaks schizophrenic mood, he should be conscious and suffer, and he took refuge behind a sort of Scottish accent and a lisp. To me, the hat is like one of her rings that change color with mood.

I always liked the “beat generation”. And of course I copied the look of Keith Richards – who, I announced, gave me permission to make a documentary about him! – To play the pirate Jack Sparrow.

Would you like the look and attitude of your characters could spill over your personal style is in town?

Or otherwise! (Laughter). The art of dress is important. The pastel lace sleeves that exceeds the hat says a lot about him. But style, as the game comes to instinct … I always liked the “beat generation”. And of course I copied the look of Keith Richards – who, I announced, gave me permission to make a documentary about him! – To play the pirate Jack Sparrow. I like clothes etched, the romanticism of Baudelaire …

After “Edward Scissorhands,” “Ed Wood,” “Sleepy Hollow,” “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory,” “Sweeney Todd” but also “The Corpse Bride,” “Alice in Wonderland” is your seventh film with Tim Burton!

The most amazing is that we always work the same way, we always use the same language obtuse among us. Except that now, each new movie, I wonder: “What if this time he did not like what I do? “Being both parents has a lot together. We are already talking to remake a movie together, an adaptation of a gothic soap seventies, seventy, entitled “Dark Shadows”. I have worked with many great directors, but with Tim is like being at the crest of a huge wave. Energy is fabulous.

Give you easily from one role to another?

I renew is vital. Moving from “Public Enemies” to “Alice in Wonderland” and then “The Rum Diary,” the adaptation of the book of my friend Hunter Thompson (Editor’s note: which will be released late 2010) is a perfect arc. The Mad Hatter was particularly after liberating the concentration required to embody John Dillinger. Also, I like the challenge of playing against a green background. Since nothing is real and that makes you give the reply to a tennis ball or a piece of Scotch, it gives you more flexibility! On the set of “Alice” was like being in a rocket and sent into the stratosphere!

Among movies to come, there is “The Tourist” with Angelina Jolie (during filming), but also the “Pirates of the Caribbean 4″ with Penélope Cruz, one speaks of a new collaboration with Emir Kusturica…

Amir and I are planning to run a version of the life of Pancho Villa. Things are emerging well, but making a film is chaotic. My friend Terry Gilliam (who always tries to finish his “Don Quixote” …) you can talk. My primary motivation for signing for another “Pirates of the Caribbean”, which is write, is selfish: I love to play Jack Sparrow! And then the first three had been shaped to work with each other, and suddenly the relationship between the characters were a bit lost. I would like to bring fans to whom I owe a lot, a final section more refined and more fun. “The Tourist” is a remake of the French thriller “Anthony Zimmer,” with Sophie Marceau and Yvan Attal. I was seduced by the idea of working under the direction of Florian Henckel von Donnersmarck (The Lives of Others “). Angelina is a gift: a serious, loving her husband and her children … And then I told the paparazzi that I had not quite caught on camera, then why not train in Paris and Venice with Brad and Angelina! (Laughter).

The actress that I also loved instantly Mia Wasikowska is playing Alice, a young girl with an old soul.

And again with Penélope Cruz, your partner in “Blow”?

I can not wait because she is an actress very exciting, you can throw any improvisation, it refers to you as surprising way. The actress that I also loved instantly Mia Wasikowska is playing Alice, a young girl with an old soul. But my accomplice in “Sweeney Todd, Helena Bonham Carter and Anne Hathaway, the red and white queen in” Alice in Wonderland “, are also remarkable. I’m lucky with my partners.

You have another project, not least with Vanessa!

“My American Lover,” a story inspired by the link between Simone de Beauvoir and Nelson Algren, an American macho as existentialist. Vanessa has already done much research. It’s very promising. We are developing the project with Lasse Hallström (the director of “Gilbert Grape” and “Chocolat”), I can not think of a false note.

Today, it’s unheard of to do so freely an occupation that is 100% fun.

How do you see your journey today?

When I did the first “Pirates of the Caribbean”, I feel spent in the enemy camp, for never before had I been well received in the commercial cinema of Hollywood: Tim Burton had been fight to win in “Charlie and the Chocolate Factory.” Today, it’s unheard of to do so freely an occupation that is 100% fun.

How do we live, day to day in the shoes of Johnny Depp?

My interests are broad but still have to do with the arts, I can not help it. I do not know if we can still be an artist in film today, but I’m obsessed with it. Otherwise, I am a simple man. You give me a very good book and a good bottle of red wine in the breeze of wind, not far from my garden, and I’m happy. When I do not work, try to go with my family in our island of Bahamas. But we spend most time in our hamlet of Var (Plan de la Tour near Sainte-Maxime) where we have a nice peaceful life. My kids have calmed down 100% and I love this pace. It is not about business, the phone does not ring, we walk, do picnics … It is a perfect existence.
